Cover Reveal: Smash Into You (Excerpt)

 Jude has spent the whole twenty one years of his life running. From what, he wasn't quite sure. His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. But then she was murdered and all he saw was a running silhouette of a man as his mother said three final words to him. Three words that changed his whole being.
          Never stop running…
          Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more.
          Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.

Excerpt
       And now, as I stared out into the dark rain to see a POS car sideways in the road, I knew the world hated me, had to, because someone had just smashed her car into my truck.
         I got out and braced myself. It wasn't easy to pay cash for new cars every time I needed to skip town. It was hard living when you couldn't be who you really were. Finding people to pay you under the table was almost impossible these days.
         I groaned and glared at the beauty standing at the end of my truck. "Look at that!"
         "I'm so sorry," she began. I could tell she really was, but I was beyond pissed. "I'll call my insurance company right now."
         That stopped me. "No!" I shouted and she jolted at the verbal assault. "No insurance."
         "Well," she pondered, "what do you mean? I have good insurance."
         "But I don't."
         She turned her head a bit in thought and then her mouth fell open as she realized what I was saying. "You don’t have any insurance, do you?"
         "No," I answered. "Look. Whatever, we'll just call this even-steven, because you did hit me."
         "Even-steven my butt!" she yelled and scurried to jump in front of me, blocking my way.
         "And what a cute butt it is."
         Even through the noise of water hitting metal, I heard her intake of breath. The rain pelted us in the dark. I hoped no one came around the corner. It would be hard for them to see us here in the middle of the road. She might get hurt. Then I wondered why I cared.
         "Look, buddy," she replied and crossed her arms. It drew my eyes to her shirt. My eyes bulged 'cause that shirt…well, it was see-through now. She caught on and jerked her crossed arms higher. "How dare you! You're on a roll in the jerkface department, you know that!"
         "My specialty," I said and saluted as I climbed in my truck. "Get your pretty butt in your car and let's pretend this never happened, shall we?"
         Because if cops and insurance were brought into this, I'd be on the run sooner than I thought.
         She huffed. "Excuse me-"
         "Darling. Car. Now." She glared. "Like right now."
         She threw her hands up in the air and yelled, "I knew chivalry was dead!" before climbing in her car and driving away. She didn't know it, but I was being as chivalrous as they come. I made sure she got out of the rain and back into her car, even though she didn't like the way I did it, and I got her as far away from me as I could.
         In my book, I deserved a freaking medal for being so chivalrous. Because people that stuck with me didn't live long.
         Just ask my mom.
         Oh, wait, you can't. She died long, long years ago saving my life. I refused to bring anyone onto this sinking ship with me. If it finally did go down, I was going down alone.

Rain's Review: The Selection

The Selection by Keira Cass

The Selection (The Selection, #1)
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.~Goodreads

~~~
Sup Chickadees! It’s time for a dystopian romance! Woot :). O.K. I’m going to be honest, The Selection met my expectations, nothing less nothing more. “A guy just like you. Same hair, same suit, same shoes, walks around, no matter what, you think it's all just a store, it's just a bench, it's just a tree. It's just what it is, nothing more!”-Molly Mahoney this is what I felt like when I was reading. It all seemed kind of predictable to me. i.e. Chick gets chosen for the Selection (duh). Chick already loves someone else. Chick is rude to prince (really?!?) Prince still likes chick... I mean if the story was any other way there wouldn't be a story, but still?
America Singer is a great female lead. I really liked her and I really connected with her. She made some dumb choices but nobody is perfect and you can’t really relate to a character that is. There didn’t seem to be anything extraordinary about her, I mean she was nice enough, slightly awkward, she was an exceptionally talented musician but as a 5 she had to have; some type of artistic talent. She is also apparently really really beautiful but since I don’t consider that when I’m talking about someone's character, personality, or special qualities, I am kind of grasping at straws when it comes to what makes her so different? But I guess that really is more lifelike than, say, Katniss. Either way she’s a cool chick that I look forward to hearing more about.
Prince Maxon: He seems like a pretty cool dude. You really can’t help but really fall for him. I mean just his first appearance in the book and you're already like, “Awwww!” or “OMG have my babies!” (depending on how your mental state is and if you’re seriously considering the latter, I am sure there are some GREAT therapists *read nut houses* around where you live) The former, however, is how I felt. He really doesn't have a mean bone in his body.
All the other characters brought something to the story, if only for a brief laugh. The book was good and I will be picking up Elite as soon as I can so I can find out what happens. Yes, didn’t I tell you? Horrible cliffhanger with a plot twist I never saw coming (didn't expect that after my intro, did ya?)
[SPOILER!!!!!- If you don’t like love triangles- DON’T READ]
~~~
Alright so any fans of angels and demons do you like shapeshifters, vampires, and other fantastical creatures? If you said yes to any or all of those then pick up a copy of INCEPTION. This book is a whirlwind of questions and confessions, swoons and heart breaks, and rhymes and riddles.
Gabrielle is the Angel of Karma: sounds pretty cool right?well let's just say the job has it perks. Those perks include some kick-butt powers and abilities and a pretty unusual job description. Gabrielle is the type of girl I could really get used to having as a friend. She is smart, funny, loyal, and a great accountability partner ;).
Lucas, Lucas, Lucas; what to say about Lucas? He is a little complicated, and maybe bi-polar. He could be all happy go lucky one second and then all doom and gloom the next. He can be kind of hard to read but I still enjoyed him. I won’t say too much so I don’t ruin any surprises for you, though i think you’ll figure it out on your lonesome :).
The book is really intriguing, it gets a little repetitive but the things that are repeated are important to remember so I can see the need. The book has a very complex plot with many different characters that are important to the story. The chapters flip flop between different POV’s that include Gabrielle, Javan, and  Lucas, among others. This book is a nice length and takes a few days of intense reading to finish, it been awhile since I have come across a nice and long book ;). The book has quite a few steamy scenes and while more-than-kissing actions are suggested or implied that’s all they are. This book stays within it’s YA rating and the boundaries aren't really pushed thankfully. There is a good bit * read a lot * of forbidden love just to warn you. This is a good read with a heckuva cliffhanger, I recommend it to anyone looking for a mystery of fantastical origins with just enough romance.

Join Gabrielle and her allies in a story of love — past and present — fantastical beings, hidden realms, magic, fate, loss, and the fight of good versus evil in, The Reaping Chronicles.

Now for the totally intense sneak peak:

The demon who had acted as the leader released a deep, throaty growl. "Don't get too happy yet, little angel. We aren't done here. Not by a long shot."
            Gabrielle's smile faded as she suddenly felt the urge to be done with this, compelling her to make quicker work of her opponents than she had intended. Partially because she didn't want Phalen to be in even more awe of her, to have her then add to the tales of Gabrielle's might—there was enough story telling going on already—but, more than that, she wanted to get the I told you so from Amaziah out of the way.
            "Demon," Gabrielle said with an edge seeping into her tone, "I am most certainly done here. Playtime is over."
            Gabrielle did no more than raise her hands. A golden bow appeared in one hand, and three arrows tipped with crackling, white Holy Fire manifested in the other. With a swift motion, she pulled the arrows back as if they were one and let them loose. The targets fell to their knees before they took two steps. Matching expressions that held both pain and surprise gazed back at her. The Fallen slowly began to burn from within, consumed by the fires of Hell they would now never leave.
            The only demon who'd spoken maintained his targeted glare at Gabrielle. "Bitch!"
            Then his form succumbed to the death that came for him, turning him into nothing more than ember and ash.
            "For you," Gabrielle said in no more than a whisper to the space where he once stood, "I was The Reaper."
            Phalen stepped forward and looked at Gabrielle. "So . . . how many arrows can you use on different targets at once, anyway?"
            Gabrielle looked at Phalen. She'd tried not to inspire what was behind the look in Phalen's eyes as her friend waited for an answer to her question. Gabrielle just smiled and quickly looked away, focusing back on the area around her.
            Satisfied that the lingering stench and ash was the only remaining evidence of her fallen brethren and their conflict, knowing the storm would unleash rain upon the landscape—joining the ash with sand—Gabrielle turned and responded to Phalen's question.
            "It doesn't matter. Let's go"
            "Sure. Why does Yahuwah allow the Fallen to still use His weapons?"
            "Amaziah told me it's some deal He made with Ramai. To keep things as equal as possible with the war." Gabrielle considered the deal Yahuwah had made before continuing. "This war is more about humans than us. He wants humanity to win it for themselves by making the right choices on their own, not through his own power or ours. It would be very easy for us to wipe out the entire population of demons if they had no defense."
            "Hmm . . ." Phalen said. "Hey . . . do you know what he was talking about when he said he thought you were trying to find a book?"
            "No, but I need to. Maybe Amaziah knows."
            "So," Phalen began, her playful tone lightening the mood slightly, "that demon was pretty sure of himself, asking you to dance. What would you do if the Devil asked you?"
            Gabrielle smirked. "If the Devil asked me to dance, I'd tell him he couldn't handle me."
            As they returned to their human forms, Gabrielle glanced back to make sure everything looked as it had before the fight began. Satisfied, she descended into her temporary body. Together, they continued walking away from the crowd until they found sufficient cover to ascend.
            What Gabrielle couldn't have noticed on the island was a flock of crows hidden behind a veil of their own. They had observed the battle as it unfolded and ended—and listened closely to the angels' conversation after it was over. As Gabrielle and Phalen resumed their stroll, the flock took flight—disappearing into the heavy black clouds closing in on the coastline. A flash of lightning lit the dismal horizon as the last crow was enveloped in the storm's roiling shadows—as if it was embracing a lost love.

Bog Tour- Down 'N Derby!

Down ‘N Derby- Lila Felix

Summary...

Maddox is running.

By accident, he discovered long ago that he was adopted as a baby and his need to find his biological father has consumed him ever since. Now, on a road trip, determined to find his father and his sanity, and armed with locations and his cousin, Nixon, to help him, maybe he can find the answers he’s been searching for. With nothing but a suitcase and a wad of cash to get him there, lead after lead takes him further from home.

But he’ll find much more than he intended.

He finds Storey, a pint sized pin-up model who has learned painful lessons about guys. Her wounds run deep, but so do his. She knows what she wants, but will she recognize it when it’s right in front of her?

Maddox can’t touch anyone without feeling like his skin is crawling, but just maybe his instinct to protect this amazing girl will supersede his own hang-ups.

If he can brush her skin and start to feel alive inside...everything will change.

So this is what I thought...

Omageeze! Lila Felix Just keeps getting better and better!! I loved this book, and Maddox, and Storey, and, and all of it :). I am so excited for y’all to read this book!
I loved Maddox so much! He is sweet, loving, the perfect gentleman, and when need be- a complete bad ace ;). The story starts and he is off to find his dad, in the middle of the night, with his cousin Nixon. Despite the cowardly way he sat of to find his dad I quickly liked and eventually loved him.
Storey, the funny, loveable, pin-up model/derby girl. Storey has been through Hades and back and is just now finishing paying for it. She meets Maddox and has to work through her demons before she could see him for who he really is and not continue to compare him to her past. But she does and they are the definition of Swoon- Worthy Couple.
This book might be third in a series and about the youngest of the three Black brothers but Maddox and Storey were their own story. They were different from Falcon and Reed, and Owen and Nellie. They had their own trials, and they had their own way of celebrating their victories. They were their own people and thats another thing I loved about this series, and this book. You can expect an original story from Lila Felix every time!
Nixon is a decent sized part of the story, some of the chapter’s were in his POV, and that makes me wonder if we'll hear more about him. But as is, he is a great friend. Reed and Falcon are also a part of this story, with some chapters from their POV as well. And you get to see a continuation  of their relationship- thank God (or Lila)- and I was so happy.
Lila Felix did a phenominamazing job and I love her this much more *envision arms as far apart as possible* after this book came out. I am looking forward to her next book and in the meantime I plan on reading this again and again ;).

Rain's Review: The Summer I Became a Nerd

The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.~Goodreads
~~~
So if you're too school for cool
And you're treated like a fool
You could choose to let it go
We can always, we can always party on our own~Pink
So nerds, let us party on our own, and read this wonderfully cute book.
Maddie is a cheerleading, pop-music loving, boy obsessed, popular girl, or is she? Who is  Madelyne Summers? Does she even like to cheerlead? Alright so I won’t go spoiling THAT big question ;) but I will say this, there is more to her than meets the eye (next thing you know I’ll be quoting Spider Man).
Let me set the scene, first week of summer she is absolutely and 100% percent excited! But about what? Hanging out with her boyfriend? NO. Going to the beach? No. A new comic book? Shhh! *cough...yes...cough* Madelyne Summers is a nerd, *GASP*. Alright so if you didn’t catch any of the sarcasm in any of that, congratulations internet you have successfully rendered my humor obsolete. applause ensues.
Maddie is a sweetie pie when she is true to herself and when she isn't worried about appearances I really enjoyed her. But it was getting through the moment when she was ashamed of liking superheroes or thinking that the new pop singer song is crap. I am, however, biased. I went to see Avenger three times in theaters, I saw Hunger Games twice, I went to see one of my favorite authors and almost fainted, and going to Comic-con is on my Bucket List (just to give you a glimpse of my nerdiness).
So, having to go through her tug-of-war of being O.K. with her nerdiness did get a little frustrating. She did make up for it all though but I won't say too much to ruin it all.
Though the book is about Maddie and her journey, there is-of course :)- a guy. Now I won’t go as far to say that he is my all time favorite book boyfriend of all time. But if I met a Logan in real life I’d be like, Marry me marry me now!
He is such a sweet, honest, and patient guy that gives everybody way more chances than they deserve. He is, in one word: adorkable, completely and utterly 100% unavoidably adorkable and OMG I love him.
So if you want to laugh your patootie off, get embarrassed, what a sweet romance unfold, and journey through a summer of self discovery then pick up one of this years perfect summer reads, The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller.
Rain's Reviews: The Perfect Chemistry Trilogy
Perfect Chemistry Trilogy Review by Simone Elkeles
Alright so this is going to be a little different type of review. I read the trilogy starting in December. As you may know I didn't start the blog until February so, instead of backtracking and reviewing a book I read four months ago and three month before I started number two and three I will do a review of the entire series.
Simone Elkeles, is an amazing author. All of the books were written exceptionally well. All the characters were real and believable. She gave diverse backgrounds for all of the families. Brittany (Perfect Chemistry), Kiara (Rules of attraction), and Nikki (Chain Reaction) were all their own people with their own back stories and futures. I really enjoyed Brittany and Kiara, Nikki however got on my nerves, but I’ll get to that later. All of the brothers were pretty much the same though, the personality traits and problems were all pretty similar and that got repetitive by the third book and made Chain Reaction less enjoyable for me.
Brittany and Alex: They are the original perfect chemistry couple, thus I really enjoyed experiencing their relationship. Sure Alex could be an egotistical jerk, but he really did care about Brittany in his own way and you can’t help but have a soft spot for him. Brittany was a little hard to handle at first and was a little run-of-the-mill but you really grew to like her. The relationship was a definite roller coaster ride that include some idiotic mistakes from both of them but you have to stick it out and love ‘em through it :).
Kiara and Carlos: my absolute favorite couple :) Rules of Attraction is the second of the trilogy and my favorite. Kiara is a innocent senior that comes from a wealthy home much like Brittany but that’s where the similarities end. Kiara is shy, a car fanatic, outdoors-y, and has a stuttering problem. The eccentric mix of attributes makes for a lovable, funny, and unique character. I really liked her. Carlos however was a lot like Alex when it came to personality and home-life. He was cocky, he was a jerk, and he was a rebel in every sense of the word. But when he meets Kiara and slowly lets down his walls how he deals with the problems is where he is different from his brother. But I won’t tell too much about that ;). I will say, however, as much as I loved the book and all the characters there were some repetition issues. Not just within the book itself but I saw quite a few similarities to Perfect Chemistry. But they definitely weren't enough to keep you from reading the book. You can read this book without reading the other two but if you do read the three stories in sequence then you get the BIG picture and it makes for a more satisfying conclusion.
Nikki and Luis: aright nerds, lets get real here. I won’t be sugar coating this one. Nikki was a Butthead she had just as many issues as Luis (and the other two bros for that matter) but its how these issues were created that gets me. I will say as a disclaimer I've never been heartbroken, just so ya’ll know. In the beginning of the book Nikki is dating Marco, but what you read is the break-up. This gets to her because she thought he was the one, she was in love, it was her first boyfriend- all these different things that led to her becoming Butthead Nikki. She then meets Luis and it is the biggest game of Tug-of-War relationship style I have seen in a long time- maybe ever. Which brings me to Luis, he was great! He was sweet, good-looking, and the rebellious Fuentes gene? not nearly as bad as the other two. Well for the first few chapters anyway. Nikki and Carlos are the definition of a messed up couple. But it wasn't even just that the couple was volatile, because I can deal with that. The problems Luis went through and issues the couple had felt old and used, because they were so similar to the other two books. About half-way through I was just finishing it because I had to. I wasn't enjoying it as much as I wanted to.
I have to say though, all books cuss, have their fair amount of violence, and each one has a non-descriptive sex scene.
The books one their own were good and as a series definitely conclusive. If you're looking for a lively romance, with innocent girls and bad-ace boys pick up the perfect chemistry trilogy (or better yet just the first two) and read your heart out.
